Information technology: Past, Present and Future

Information technology is the technology which uses the computer or computing device to collect, process, store and provide information when and where it is needed.

According to Wikipedia "Information technology (IT) is the use of computers to store, retrieve, transmit, and manipulate data, or information, often in the context of a business or other enterprise."

In the context of the business,  the Information Technology Association of America has defined information technology as "the study, design, development, application, implementation, support or management of computer-based information systems".

Modern world is experiencing a rapid growth and development of Information Technology resulting in more dependence of the society on it in almost all walks of life. Information Technology has rightly proved to have drastically improved quality, excellence, efficiency and accuracy.

Looking a couple of decades back; in the mid 80s the expansion of the Internet and the World Wide Web, in particular, revolutionized communications as it enabled tech-industry and related organizations to demonstrate their offerings and reach the global market in an effective manner. As a result, most of organizations had to readdress their strategic management to redesign their practices in order to take advantage of this revolution. This revolution had knocked at the door, urging the society to be prepared for a paradigm-shift to cope with the rapidly-changing digital world.

The Tech-industry and businesses and the way they used to operate, shifted from their traditional mode of operation and management to the information-technology-oriented ways, the transitions referred to as Digital Transformation. Since change was (and is) the only constant thing, digital
transformation has become significant for all businesses, whether small, medium or large. Be it automation, marketing, logistics, software, retail or medical, digital transformation is omnipresent.

This is not just about embracing information technology, this is about a change in thought and organization culture. There is a need for organizations to address the change in business models, dynamic business demands and innovate ways to quickly cater to these changing needs. This is what information technology is all about, that is, accelerate business activities, lower cost, and bring about a positive change in processes, people, and the society at large.

What are the most common and prevalent Information Technology drivers today; to start with AI, Data Sciences, Virtualization, Edge Computing. Of course these have spawned a variety of other players, e.g, neural networks, face recognition, etc. fall under AI umbrella.

Artificial Intelligence is no longer limited to powerful supercomputers and big systems. It is rapidly becoming a part and parcel of smartphones and wearable devices, gadgets and other equipment. Edge computing is emerging as the next big area in AI.

In the time to come, Information Technology will ultimately change everybody’s lives, transforming the way we live, work and deal with the rest of the world. Early implementations of AI in connected devices today are setting up the stage for tomorrow’s smart homes, smart devices, smart businesses, smart cities, and perhaps the smart people, all with capabilities that no one has ever thought of.

More companies will adopt AI because the technology will converge with the Internet of Things (IoT) and the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) at the edge computing layer. Cloud Computing will have far more rate of acceptability and adaptability by both individuals as well as the businesses. Blockchain made its mark in 2018, some say it might even have been over-hyped but 2019 will be the year when real-world use cases emerge.
